VW Golf Rallye G60 was built to meet the homologation rules for Group A when Group B was banned. VW needed to produced 5000 of these golfs to meet the fisa regulations. The story of Golf Rallye start at 1987 when the golf ” Syncro GT” was introduced to the public. To distinguish this Golf from other Golfs some major changes was made to the drivetrain, engine and exterior.
VW added the Syncro AWD system which used a fluid coupling (visco) to shift power to the rear wheels when needed. Power was increased with the 8 valve G60 1.8-liter engine. Basicaly, G60 engine was a supercharged version of the GTI engine with a VW’s G-Lader supercharger. The result: 160 hp and 225 Nm torque. the engine was reduced from 1781 cc (PG) to 1,763 cc ( 1H) for fisa homologation purposes. The exterior of the golf also got a new image: new flared fenders, 3-slam grill and new rectangular front headlights.
2nd of March in 1989 – Golf Rallye G60 was born.
